Spartacus: The Original Rebel

We are presenting the theatrical experiment Spartacus by Badal Sircar, based on Howard Fast`s novel, in a psychophysical style with young actors/actresses from the Swatantra Theater Group, Pune.

We are presenting this story of the Roman Empire from 71 years before Christ to you, in the 21st century, in the year 2024.

When the slave Spartacus raises his voice against the imperialist Rome, the very foundation of Rome begins to shake because this foundation stands on the real power of these slaves. Just as when all the farmers and working class of a country revolt, the foundation of that country is shaken. In such a situation, the ruling class uses every possible cruel and violent means to crush it and makes the oppression even harsher and more cruel under the pressure of its rule. By doing so, the entire process of that rebellion is destroyed and corrupted.

That`s why Spartacus should be viewed in today`s context. This is not just a story from ancient times, but it connects with the present reality. Somewhere or the other, barbaric exploitation is still happening today.

Whenever we hear the echo of protest, we remember Spartacus, the original rebel, every time.
