Drama | Hindi | Age 12+

The Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Centre: Delhi | 200 Onwards

“Subarnalata” is a play based on the novel by the same name written by Ashapoorna Devi, one of the best Bengali authors of all times. Set in early 19th century Calcutta, Subarnalata is a girl who was married off at the age of nine against her mother's wishes into a conservative family. It’s the story of the struggle of this feisty girl to find some space for herself in an environment that is extremely restrictive and claustrophobic. The story ironically is set in the backdrop of the ongoing reform movement in Bengal. Two centuries down the line, with independence, development and modernization – has the plight of women changed in any way? Is it likely to change?
