As women, we have been raised in a society where conversations about our bodies make us, and people around us, uncomfortable. The conversations even on a subject as pertinent & imperative as breast cancer is buried in deep crevices of private homes of survivors and discussed, if at all, in hushed tones.

‘Turmali’ is an attempt to provoke a thought, initiate discussions and bring to fore conversations on ever-transforming human bodies. Does ‘losing’ one’s body part make us incomplete? Do incomplete bodies imply incomplete people; in the way society perceives us? What does it mean to lose a breast given the complex relationship of a woman’s breast with her own identity as a woman and as a symbol of femininity? These are some of the questions Turmali – an experimental performance piece from the repertoire of Anunaad Performing Arts – addresses.

Inspired from Louise Page’s phenomenal play – ‘Tissue’, Turmali follows the journey of Sandhi- a young, independent woman – who discovers she has breast cancer. Through riveting performances, lighting and sound design, this experimental theatre performance, plays out her journey of her struggle with breast cancer, the fear of loss, attempts to come to terms with her body, her transient relationships, the story of self-discovery, breaking the perceptions of an incomplete body and her ‘becoming’ a complete human being.
