How do you make the inanimate convincing? And how do you find a way or ways to tell your own stories with images and language of your own? These are the questions that drive Shilpa Ranade’s work as an illustrator, animator, and image-maker. And she goes seeking for answers in the shadow puppetry of India, in the traditional Czech puppets in Prague, in our paintings and literary forms, in the stories we tell our children, and in the formal aspects of animation.

We are delighted to invite Shilpa Ranade – animator, book illustrator, image-maker, and perpetual student – to Mumbai Local to share with us her experiments with image-making that refuses formulas and seeks its own voice. The core focus of her talk will be on her work with Goopi Gawaiya Bagha Bajaiya – inspired by Satyajit Ray’s Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne - first as an illustrated book and then as an animation feature which has received accolades ever since its release. Just for fun, for those who have not already seen the film, take a look at the trailer here.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday for a delightful evening with image-making and animation, and all the varied, incredible craft and thinking that goes into this work. A must for Satyajit Ray fans, who can additionally enjoy seeing his work living on in multiple forms.

Curated by Ramu Ramanathan

RSVP for the session opens on Monday 7th October 2019.
