SYNOPSIS
Panipat is set in 1761, when the Maratha Empire had reached its zenith and their grip on Hindustan reigned supreme with no one to challenge them. Until an invader set his eyes on the throne of Hindustan. That`s when Sadashiv Rao Bhau (Arjun Kapoor), the Commander-in-Chief of the Maratha army led a northern expedition in order to repel the invading forces of Ahmad Shah Abdali (Sanjay Dutt), the king of Afghanistan.

This action-drama entailing the events that led to the Third Battle of Panipat, stars Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Kapoor and Kriti Sanon. It is produced by Sunita Gowariker under their banner of AGPPL along with Rohit Shelatkar`s company Vision World and is directed by Ashutosh Gowariker.

Verdict: Panipat is a war feast with Ashutosh Gowarikers signature style of grandeur. Ashutosh Gowariker has been MIA in Bollywood since his last film Mohenjo Daro, which released way back in 2016. The filmmaker behind iconic films like Lagaan and Jodhaa Akbar now makes his epic comeback with the historical drama Panipat, which is a fictionalized retelling of the Third Battle of Panipat. Panipat delves into a significant chapter in history and is a war drama that lauds the unshakeable bravery, courage and the strong principles of the Marathas. ...Read full review
The cast has a good ensemble of actors including Sanjay Dutt Mohnish Bahl, Padmini Kolhapure, Zeenat Aman, Suhasini Mulay and Kunal Kapoor playing key characters. They certainly evoke curiosity, but the one who remains most watchable of all, was undoubtedly Sanjay Dutt as Abdali. Actors often complain that in costume dramas, costumes often wear them, but with Dutt as the swashbuckling Afghan, its the other way around. His imposing presence looms large over the film and courtesy his impeccable villainous actions, Dutt makes quite an impression. ...Read full review
The film`s voice over narration, presented in the form of the recollections of the male protagonist`s wife, is comatose. You have got to wait until the very end of the war and the film - both are excruciatingly long - to figure out the reason why this chronicle is this flaccid. Panipat definitely isn`t Mohenjo Daro. But is that saying much? It will take three hours of your life and a whole lot of patience to sit through this laboured film. Think twice. ...Read full review
So yes, Panipat is shorn of Padmaavat and Kesari`s insidious intent, but it is not exactly an innocent, truthful chronicler of Indian history. Add to that its lack of polish and spark, and for all its occasional positives, it ends up as just an average affair. ...Read full review
PANIPAT is a magnificently mounted historical war movie with an impressive sweep and passionate salute to the great Maratha pride. The kind of entertaining and enthralling flourishes that has made Ashutosh Gowariker an irresistible storyteller. The movie sees Ashutosh Gowariker regain his footing after previous disappointment and thats what we all wanted. (an extra for the comeback of the maverick) ...Read full review
Overall, Panipat is a sincere effort by the entire team and those who enjoy period drama should give it a chance. Though I would say it could have been made shorter by chopping off a few unwanted songs. Now, Panipat may not travel in your senses after you leave the theatre like Jodha Akbar and Lagaan did but will surely keep you engaged and entertained for the time you are inside the theatre. ...Read full review
On the whole, PANIPAT throws light on an important chapter of Indian history with the battle scenes as its USP. At the box office, it will need a strong word of mouth since it faces competition in the form of PATI PATNI AUR WOH. ...Read full review
Panipat is for people who skipped the pages of history and never realised the enormity of the Maratha empire. It is not a war film. War is just a part of the story. Ashutosh, Arjun and Kritis Panipat is about how mighty empires were built and sustained. What transpires when politics is about a choice between winning and principles? Its about valour, and honour one earns from the enemy even in times of a defeat. ...Read full review
