Kyra presents the vibrant sounds from the Brazilian and Caribbean carnivals, such as samba and calypso, the exciting Spanish rumba, the sensual rhythms from Latin America, such as salsa, cumbia, cha cha cha, the sophisticated bossa-nova, jazz standards, together with covers of popular artists. All of which will be performed by a remarkable duo from Down Under - Queensland to be exact. Meet Paul Santiago and Nick Almenor a duo who has adopted instruments like the steelpan that first appeared in the 1930`s in Trinidad and Tobago, made from stolen garbage bins and discarded oil drums. But it was only after World War II, as an indirect result of the colonial government restrictions at the time, that it found its place in popular music. Today`s steelpan is finely crafted, carries the full chromatic range of notes and can be used for just about any type of music. As for the Spanish guitar, it needs no introduction. Made popular by the Spanish gypsies accompanying dancers with percussive & pulsating rhythms, it is also the main harmonic instrument in most Latin American music.

This has to be one of the most remarkable acts weve ever hosted at Kyra. How do we even begin to describe the performers? We could say Blue Monster, Pink Gorilla and Rooster, but you would never believe us. So just come on down to Kyra on Jan 22 and watch in open-mouthed disbelief as one of New Yorks quirkiest bands, dressed in bright animal costumes play a delectable blend of ragtime music using xylophones and upright bass guitars! Described by The Morning News as "an artistic assault on the sensory order of nitrous oxide", they were featured on MTV Daily Detox, after their tour of Bodegas (convenience stores) of the boroughs of New York (Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens, Manhattan) where they first shocked the folks in the street and then inexorably brought a smile to their careworn faces. Indeed, that is the mission of Xylpholks: bring smiles to faces.
