The Nehru Planetarium in New Delhi is situated in the green surroundings of the Teen Murti House, earlier the official residence of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru and now a museum in his memory. Conscious of the fact that an understanding of the spirit and method of science was crucial for children to become responsible citizens, Nehru liked every opportunity to be provided to them in this endeavor. In 1964, the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund was set up to promote his ideas and subsequently it undertook to build the Nehru Planetarium with its primary aim being the promotion of astronomy education. Nehru Planetarium is now a wing of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, an autonomous body under Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
Since its inception, the Nehru Planetarium has been playing a seminal role in disseminating knowledge about celestial space sciences and promoting education in astronomy. With a view to bringing its equipment and infrastructure at par with other planetariums in the world, the Nehru Planetarium was modernized by installing a Hybrid Projector in the year 2010. With its various innovative and informative shows like ‘Ultimate Universe', 'New Solar System' and ‘Astronaut’, it enlightens its visitors about the mysteries of the sky. The planetarium is amongst the few in the world, which has frequently updated full-dome shows, which have been created completely in-house.
The strength of the Planetarium lies in its live interactions and programs, which have been constantly improvised and innovated, over the years, for visitors, students and amateur astronomers. Programs for school and college students and amateur astronomers along with workshops and observing activities are organized throughout the year.
