Onam Sadhya is a traditional feast celebrated during Onam, a major festival in the Indian state of Kerala. It`s a grand vegetarian banquet served on a banana leaf and is a key part of the Onam festival, which celebrates the homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali.


Here’s what you can typically expect in an Onam Sadhya:


Rice and Main Dishes:


Rice: The centerpiece of the meal is usually plain, steamed Kerala red rice or matta rice.

Sambar: A spicy, tangy lentil stew with vegetables like pumpkin, carrots, and beans.

Paripu: Special Made Dal

Rasam: A tamarind-based soup with tomatoes and spices, often served as a digestive aid.

Avial: A mixed vegetable dish cooked in a coconut and yogurt-based gravy.

Moru:Buttermilk

Thoran: A dry vegetable stir-fry, usually made with grated coconut and spices, and often featuring ingredients like cabbage or beans.


Side Dishes:


Kalan: A yogurt-based curry with vegetables like yam or raw banana.

Olan: A mild coconut milk stew with pumpkin and black-eyed peas.

Pachadi: A sweet and tangy yogurt-based dish with fruits like pineapple or cucumber.

Inji Puli: A ginger-tamarind chutney with a sweet and spicy flavor.

Kuttu Curry: Mixed Vegetable Curry

Pickles: Various types of homemade pickles add a spicy and tangy contrast.

2 Types Of Payasam: A traditional sweet pudding made with rice, vermicelli, or lentils, cooked in milk and flavored with cardamom, raisins, and cashews. Variations include Parippu Payasam (made with lentils) and Palada Payasam (made with rice ada).


The meal is served on a banana leaf, and the dishes are arranged in a specific order.
