Title: How We Pieced Together the Human Genome
Speaker: Mayuri Rege, HBCSE-TIFR
Abstract: How do you solve a jigsaw puzzle with millions of pieces, no picture on the box, and thousands of pieces that look exactly alike? That's the challenge scientists faced when they set out to read the human genome. Machines could read only short stretches of DNA, so the 3-billion-letter genome had to be shredded into millions of tiny fragments, each read separately and then fitted back together in the right order.
Come explore the ingenious ideas behind the Human Genome Project, from cutting and copying DNA to sequencing and assembling an entire genome. Roll up your sleeves and try piecing together parts of a genome yourself!
