Across generations, Krishna has been celebrated as the playful cowherd, devoted son, loyal friend, the stealer of butter and hearts, and the Supreme Consciousness whose love knows no bounds. His life was shaped by many women, but what happens when a daughter is born in his image?
Among the many stories of Krishna recorded in the Bhagavatam is a fleeting mention of his daughter Charumathi, leaving the rest of her life to the imagination. What might she have been like? What place did she hold in her father’s heart, and how did she fit into the myriad women in his life?
Bharatanatyam dancers Pritika Krishnakumar, a student of Guru Dr. Jayashree Rajagopalan and Guru Rukmini Vijaykumar, and Sandhya Muralidharan, a student of Guru Mamatha Karanth and Guru Rukmini Vijaykumar, and co-founders of Sārthika Productions, bring this imagined relationship to the stage. Through an evocative blend of Bharatanatyam and theatre, ‘Charumathi’ explores the special bond between a father and daughter.
