About The Event

Chilambu – The performance of Pottan Theyyam unfolds as a sacred journey of devotion and wisdom, beginning with an invocation to the Gods and guardians of the directions, followed by the symbolic revealing of the mask and transformation into Pottan Theyyam, the incarnation of lord Shiva. Through ritual tools, chants, and sacred acts, the Theyyam embodies purity and truth, leading to the profound encounter between Sri Adi Shankaracharya and Pottan Theyyam—Lord Shiva disguised as a Chandala. In this dialogue, Pottan challenges caste discrimination, reminding that all beings share the same essence and blood, and reveals his true divine form through a riddle symbolizing cosmic unity. Humbled, Shankaracharya receives Shiva’s blessings and ascends the Sarvajnapeedam, the throne of ultimate knowledge. The event concludes with Shiva’s return to the feminine fire, as the dancer surrenders in bhakti, completing the cycle of divine union and grace.

Poothanamoksham - Poothana, a demoness sent by King Kamsa, comes to Gokulam disguised as a beautiful woman with the intention of killing infant Krishna. She smears poison on her breasts and tries to feed the child. However, Krishna suckles not only the poison but also her life force, killing Poothana. As she dies, her demonic form is revealed, but because she offered him her breast, she attains moksha (liberation). The story highlights Krishna’s divine power and the theme of redemption through devotion, even when it is unintended. In Kathakali, Poothanamoksham is especially noted for its strong female character portrayal, expressive abhinaya, and emotional depth.
