About The Event

From prayer to celebration, choreographer and dancer Ashish Patil sets devotion in motion through the powerful footwork, rhythms and storytelling of Maharashtrian folk dance.

Rooted in Maharashtra’s rich heritage, ‘Gondhali’ draws from Devicha Gondhal and Jagran, unfolding from invocation into a vibrant expression of faith. It is an age-old ritual performed in honour of the family deity—the kuldaivat or kulswamini. At its heart are halad and kunku (turmeric and vermilion), symbols of sacredness and auspiciousness. Through expressive movement, traditional rhythms and moving narration, the performance evokes the presence of the deity while bringing together masculine strength and feminine grace as complementary energies.

Choreographed and performed by Ashish Patil, the production brings this living folk form into a contemporary theatrical setting while retaining its ritual character. As the energy builds, ‘Gondhali’ culminates in a sacred celebration that is ultimately an offering to the divine.

Ashish is widely recognised for his distinctive interpretation of Lavani and his work in Maharashtrian folk dance. His career spans nearly two decades across Marathi and Hindi film, television and live productions. His credits include choreography for Chandramukhi, associations with Eka Peksha Ek and Boogie Woogie, and a place on the judging panel of Dholkichya Talavar. He has also presented Lavani internationally through workshops and performances, retaining the form’s traditional character and theatricality. In 2024, he founded Kalangan, a Mumbai-based dance and performing arts studio.
