This workshop is a part of a country wide tour of the metropolitans spreading awareness of traditional West African Djembe.
The djembe is a goblet shaped percussion instrument that hails from the Mandingue (Western Africa). This instrument has grown in popularity over the last few decades and is a universal symbol of joy. About your teacher:
Kelvin Kew: Kelvin is a professional percussionist par excellence based out of Singapore. He is also the vice president of the Tam Tam Mandingue International Djembe Academy. He has worked in close contact with grandmaster Mamady Keita for over two decades and has tirelessly worked toward initiating people in the ways of traditional West African Djembe as he was masterfully initiated by his teacher. He also performs nationally and internationally with his band the Fanka Fellas.
Varun Venkit: Varun is a well known percussionist from Pune, India. He is India`s only senior certified djembe teacher and was bestowed this honour by the grandmaster Mamady Keita himself. Varun has been studying with Mamady since 2010 and has sowed the seeds of traditional West African Djembe in India ever since... He is the founder of Taal Inc., an organisation that pioneered the drum circle revolution in the country.
