About The Event

Flux School of Arts specialises in various forms of body movement.

We are excited to bring you our slate of unique workshops in April that will give you a chance to experience a variety of movement arts which are being facilitated by some of the most skilled practitioners.

The third of these is a Kalaripayattu workshop facilitated by Raam Kumar.

Kalaripayattu, also known simply as Kalari, is an Indian martial art that originated in modern-day Kerala, a state on the southwestern coast of India. Kalaripayattu is known for its long-standing history within Indian martial arts.

The word “Kalari” means “space” or “arena” in Malayalam, the indigenous language of Kerala. Northern Style Kalaris are palm leaf covered pits and they have been dug into the red earth of Southern India since times immemorial. 42 by 21 feet and built-in strict east-west-alignment, the entrance three and a half stairs down from the east, they sing an ancient hymn to Kundalini – that which “resides in the pit”.

Kalari stresses the practice of archetypical movement principles and primal whole body movement over the repetitive practice of isolated techniques. These are movements that we can instinctively rely upon in times when fear- or stress-induced surges of adrenalin make a trained response all but impossible. Kalari grandmasters have described this process as “training the reptile brain”.

Raam Kumar is an Actor/Performer, Teacher, Dancer, Physician and a Researcher. He has 20 years of experience in performing and 12 years of experience in teaching. His research revolves around different movement vocabularies like Kalarippayat, Yoga and Contemporary dance. He has also done his research on Body alignment ideas and treatment using Acupressure, Yoga therapy, Chiropractic, and Kalari chikilsa. And, he is also a Doctor of Alternative Medicine (Post Graduate Diploma in Alternative Medicine).
