Bengal is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and diverse artistic traditions, including music, literature, dance, and visual arts. In this workshop, we will explore one of Bengal's most fascinating and thought-provoking art forms -

Kalighat Paintings.

Bold, expressive & vibrant, Kalighat paintings beautifully bring together a variety of themes, ranging from Hindu mythology and spirituality to secular life and social commentary.

Originating in 19th-century Kolkata during the colonial period, this distinctive art form developed around the Kalighat Temple, dedicated to Goddess Kali. The paintings were traditionally created on patas (cloth or paper scrolls) by artists known as Patuas. Located near the banks of the Hooghly River and the popular Kalighat Temple, the area attracted pilgrims, locals, and foreign visitors, creating a thriving audience for these unique artworks.

However, with the growing popularity of printed reproductions in the early 20th century, traditional handmade Kalighat paintings gradually declined.

The legacy of this expressive art form was later reinterpreted and celebrated by renowned Indian artist Jamini Roy, who drew inspiration from Bengal's folk traditions and brought a distinctive modern interpretation to traditional Indian art.
