Lavani scholar Bhushan Korgaonkar and a spirited ensemble bring Maharashtra’s vibrant song-and-dance tradition to the stage through infectious rhythms, vivid storytelling and expressive movement.
Beyond its familiar Bollywood image, Lavani holds a rich and diverse world of repertoires and performance traditions. At its heart is Sangeet Bari and its intimate, semi-classical form, Baithakichi Lavani, a tradition shaped by direct audience connection, expressive movement and the distinctive energy of live performance.
Curated by B Spot Productions and guided by Lavani scholar, writer and researcher Bhushan Korgaonkar, ‘Lavanichi Baithak’ brings this lesser-known world into focus through a lively baithak featuring artists rooted in Sangeet Bari, Dholki Fadacha Tamasha and Banner Shows. The repertoire moves across Baithakichi, Khadi, Phadachi and Andharatali Lavani, alongside Qawwali, Chakkad, Mujra, Gan and Gawlan, spanning old, forgotten and newer compositions.
Live singing, music and dance unfold alongside research-led commentary in Hindi and English, offering a glimpse into the many styles and nuances of the form. With performances by Pushpa Satarkar, Gauri Jadhav, Gita Waikar, Meerabai Punekar, Akshay Malvankar, Vaishali Samsapurkar, Puja Javalekar, Bharat Kudalkar, Vinayak Javale and Sumit Kudalkar, the evening reveals the breadth of a tradition that continues to evolve while retaining its distinctive character.
