An award-winning instrumentalist, composer and bandleader, Marta Pereira da Costa is the first woman to play the Portuguese guitar professionally in Fado, Portugal’s soulful music of love and longing. Renowned for transforming the instrument into a voice of its own, she brings a distinctive contemporary sensibility to one of Portugal’s most enduring musical traditions.
Accompanied by José Pita on guitar and Carlos Antunes on percussion, Marta presents her original compositions in ‘The Voice of the Portuguese Guitar’, drawing on traditional Portuguese music alongside influences from Brazilian Chorinho, Cape Verdean morna, world music and jazz. Her performance balances sensitivity and delicacy with an intense, dynamic energy, while retaining a distinctly Portuguese identity.
