Sitarist Shakir Khan and flautist J. A. Jayant come together for an evening of raga-led exchange, where Hindustani and Carnatic traditions meet in a spirited interplay of melody, rhythm and improvisation.
A meeting of two classical traditions, Milap brings together Sitarist Shakir Khan and Flautist J. A. Jayant in a concert shaped by dialogue and exchange. Moving through a selection of ragas, the sitar and flute respond to each other with clarity and ease, allowing each form to retain its identity while opening into a shared musical space.
Sitarist Shakir Khan, a leading exponent of the Etawah gharana and son and disciple of Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan, is known for his command over sur and laya, developed through years of rigorous training and performances across major classical festivals. Alongside him, Flautist J. A. Jayant brings a distinct Carnatic voice, marked by tonal depth and measured phrasing that both complements and challenges the sitar.
They are joined by tabla artist Satyajit Talwalkar and Mridangam artist Vijay Natesan, whose rhythmic interplay anchors and elevates the performance. Talwalkar’s dynamic approach, balancing intricate structure with spontaneous improvisation—infuses the ensemble with energy and precision. While Natesan, recognised for his work with leading Carnatic musicians, brings depth and tonal richness through his command over South Indian rhythm.
