About the Movie:
'Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors' was adapted in 1964 by Ivan Chendei and Sergei Parajanov from a novel by Mikhaylo Kotsyubinsky. It is a stylized cinematic rendition of the tale of Ivan and Marichka, two childhood friends who fall in love despite the hostilities between their families. Marichka dies in a drowning incident and Ivan marries Palagna, but he can't get over Marichka's death who constantly appears to him. The film is hauntingly lyrical in its use of color, costume and music. Set in the Carpathian mountains, the film is a rare glimpse into the native Hutsul culture of Ukraine.
