About The Event

Step into the world of Sant Janābāi, where evocative dance, soulful music, and poetic storytelling intertwine to celebrate devotion and resilience.

Steeped in the lyricism and devotion of Maharashtra's Vārkari tradition, this dance theatre production reimagines the life and poetry of Sant Janābāi, a saint-poet whose abhangs transcend time, caste, and circumstance. Through a vibrant interplay of Bharatanatyam, North Indian classical music, and the soulful rhythms of traditional abhang, the performance brings Janābāi's world to the stage – a world where daily chores become moments of spiritual revelation and the ordinary is transformed into the sublime.

Conceptualised and musically directed by Janhavi Phansalkar, with choreography and performance by acclaimed dancer Navia Natarajan, the work features evocative vocals by Phansalkar and Dhani Gundecha, richly textured pakhawaj accompaniment, and illuminating narration by Chinthu Param. Each segment traces Janābāi's journey from devoted disciple of Sant Nāmadéva to revered Singing Saint, drawing out themes of faith, resilience, and the oneness that underpins all existence.

Blending dhrupad, khayāl, and Vārkari melodies within a contemporary theatrical framework, the production invites audiences to rediscover Janābāi's enduring message that the sacred often emerges from the most humble moments and that courage and devotion can dissolve boundaries. More than a homage, it is an immersive encounter with a legacy that continues to inspire, inviting reflection on the transformative power of song, story, and spiritual pursuit.
