Kathak and Bharatanrithyam meet in OJAS, a striking dance production by Nirupama and Rajendra that blends rare Natyashastra Karanas, original music and contemporary imagination into a luminous celebration of rhythm, storytelling and classical beauty.
A meeting of two classical traditions, OJAS brings together the lyrical grace of Kathak and the sculptural dynamism of Bharatanrithyam through the visionary choreography of award-winning artists Nirupama Rajendra and T.D. Rajendra, one of India’s celebrated dancing duos, partners in life and on stage. Presented by Abhinava Dance Company, the production blends intricate rhythm, expressive storytelling, rare Karanas from the Natyashastra and original music into a performance that feels both timeless and contemporary.
The evening opens with Angahāra, a reverent homage to Shiva as the cosmic dancer, before flowing into Laya-Lasya and Abhisaar in Nature, where the river becomes a metaphor for longing and surrender. Abhijnā reimagines Kalidasa’s classic romance through playful narration, while No Strings Attached creates a fresh dialogue between Kathak and Carnatic violin. The finale, Leela, sees both dance traditions move from distinct identities toward a shared artistic harmony.
Expansive yet intimate, OJAS is a luminous celebration of classical depth, artistic innovation and creative renewal.
