About The Event

Kathak artist and choreographer Sanjukta Wagh brings poetry, Hindustani music and dance into a vibrant dialogue to explore India’s rich artistic heritage, joined by Rutuja Lad on vocals, Vivek Mishra on tabla and Sandeep Mishra on sarangi.

‘Rangrez’ is a homecoming of poetic voices from across centuries and geographies, where Shah Akbar Danapuri and Nazir Akbarabadi’s ode to ephemeral life meets Mirabai’s contemplation of longing; Kabir’s ulat-bansi, embracing paradox, leads to Soyrabai’s vision of oneness. Together, these distinct perspectives unfold through word, sound and image in a sensorial movement from the gross to the subtle.

Conceptualised, choreographed, and performed by Sanjukta Wagh, the production features draws on poetry by Soyrabai, Kabir, Mirabai, Nazir Akbarabadi and K. Mahavir, set to compositions by Kumar Gandharva, Kishori Amonkar, Girija Devi, Veena Sahasrabuddhe, Rutuja Lad and Sanjukta Wagh. Music arrangements are by Rutuja Lad, Vivek Mishra and Sandeep Mishra.

A performer, choreographer, teacher and curator, Sanjukta Wagh trained in Kathak under Smt Rajashree Shirke and in Hindustani music under Pandit Murli Manohar Shukla. Her practice explores new possibilities of expression within Kathak through dance, movement and interdisciplinary approaches. She is also a founding member of Beej, a school that examines the pedagogies and tools through which artists are shaped. Her notable works include A Rage and Beyond and Haravlele Pratibimb.
