In 1936 ethnologist Christoph Von Frer-Haimendorf entered Nagaland with a camera and took the first photographs of the Konyak Nagas, later published in his book, Naked Nagas. Haimendorfs representation of the Nagas as primitive and traditional and his description of their social life became the way the world looked at this proud tribe.
In 2015 Nagaland based photographer Zubeni Lotha returns to the Konyaks and attempts to understand and critique Haimendorfs gaze. She builds a dialogue around representation and stereotyping with her own photographs of the Konyak Nagas, and explores an alternative way of looking at the Nagas devoid of exoticism.
Zubeni Lotha shares the outcome of her fascinating and important research project illustrated with photographs and the story of her own encounter with the Konyak Nagas.
This presentation is a part of Searching Cultures which is a year-long collaboration between Tamaasha Theatre and India Foundation for the Arts presenting a selection of IFA grantee projects.
