With Janmashtami just a few days away, we present Shyam Rang to celebrate the legend of Krishna - `the dark one` - through music. Indian music has a huge repertoire of compositions, whose textual content is dedicated to the amorous exploits of Krishna - the cowherd of Brindavan, and also to the spiritual and philosophical thoughts associated with his divine love. Haveli Sangit, also called Pushtimargiya Sangit, focuses on Krishna-Lila, and is a distinctive form of music-making inspired by passionate devotion to Krishna. The repertoire includes padas composed by the followers of Vallabhacharya (1479-1531), the founder of the Pushti sect. The compositions are specific to seasonal festivals and also for the eight temple rituals performed at specific times during the day. Rattan Mohan Sharma belongs to Mewatigharana and has had privilege of training with his eminent uncle, Pandit Jasraj. His wide-ranging repertoire includes dhrupad, haveli sangeet, khayal, tappa, tarana, bhajan and Rajasthani folk music. An `A` grade artiste of AIR, he has to his credit, several albums of devotional music. In this concert of Haveli Sangit, Sharma will render some devotional padas in the inimitable style propagated by his mentor.
