Reimagining the poetry of visionary saints such as Kabir, Mirabai, Tukaram, Bulleh Shah, Nazrul, Surdas, Narsinh Mehta, Gyaneshwar, and Andal, this digital music project transforms songs of resistance and reform into a powerful contemporary call to the collective conscience.
Singing as a path to reform has deep roots in India’s spiritual and cultural life. ‘Singing Saints’ is a digital initiative conceptualised by Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia’s Vrindaban Gurukul & Eastern Harmony, presenting eight live music presentations that honour rebel poet-saints whose verses challenged social divisions and continue to affirm the dignity of the human soul. Hosted by Reshma Shetty and Vikas Rawat, the performance draws on poetry from across India in multiple languages, where each song features selected verses set to new compositions. Arranged, produced, and performed by some of India’s most promising emerging musicians, these contemporary interpretations remain true to the spirit of the original poetry.
Reflecting the legacy of the Bhakti tradition, where singing became a means of connection and reform, these works transcend barriers of caste, religion, and class. The saint-poets’ compassion and courage helped shape India’s cultural consciousness through lived experience rather than institutional authority.
Featuring performances by Reeshabh Prohit, Shehnaaz Khan and Shaheen Khan, Ayesha Mukherjee, Renee Chaurasia, Sujesh Menon, Anjana Padmanabhan, and Swar Sharma, with a special feature by Anuradha Chaurasia, and music by Gulraj Singh, ‘Singing Saints’ brings together poetry, music, and purpose as an ode to the voices that continue to resonate with relevance and conviction.
