Imagine a passionate lover of all shades of Indian classical music being stuck on a desert island! Curious to know what music he or she would be carrying? And why? In our new Desert Island series three such crazy-about-music rasikas introduce us to their favourite Indian classical music and give us rare insights into a rich tradition!
Session Two: Gouri Dange
Gouri Dange is a published writer, book editor and family counsellor. She grew up in a family and neighbourhood of listeners and music saadhaks in Chembur Mumbai, Singapore, and Pune. Later, she associated closely with musicologist Ashok Ranade as an editor on some of his works, music listener and close family friend. She draws equal pleasure and sustenance from recordings of the old masters as well as from the live and contemporary Hindustani Classical Music world. She now has a growing interest in Carnatic classical music too.
For the Desert Island series, she would like to bring a selection of music recordings that she calls her `Play it at my funeral` list - a fast-growing list of recorded music that she listens to often and that she cannot do without.
To introduce listeners to this list, she would like to side-step the nomenclature, structures, diagnostic-points route; and hopes to build a swaying rope bridge between the selected music and the listener.
Through guided listening and free discussion, we will build a conversation around the oeuvre of desert island-worthy recordings! The selected recordings will include both vocal and instrumental items, as well as the occasional popular number.
At the heart of this series are our passionate and idiosyncratic rasikas sharing their love for classical Indian music. If you have waited for that perfect classical music appreciation club all your life ... wait no more!
