Adapted from Tagore’s Tasher Desh, this inclusive ensemble production uses movement, rhythm, and minimal text to explore freedom, conformity, and self-expression through the talents of performers with disabilities.
Drawing from Rabindranath Tagore’s Tasher Desh, this ensemble production offers a fresh, inclusive interpretation of the classic allegory of freedom and conformity. Performed by individuals with disabilities aged 14 and above, the story follows a restless prince who journeys beyond his palace into a world where people live like playing cards, governed by an unyielding hierarchy and rules that suppress spontaneity and self-expression. The prince’s arrival, marked by impulsive energy and music, begins to disrupt this rigid order, inviting curiosity, movement, and rediscovery of choice.
Presented by The Gateway Studio, the performance uses stylised movement, rhythm, and minimal text to highlight individuality and emotional nuance, cantering inclusive casting as a core value. Developed within The Gateway School of Mumbai under the Keshavlal V. Bodani Education Foundation, the production is grounded in advocacy and innovation in special education. Collaborating with educators, therapists, and practitioners, the studio crafts student-led performances that elevate the voices and experiences of individuals with disabilities, fostering deeper awareness and dialogue around inclusion and the power of expression.
