Ustad Shujaat Husain Khan is regarded as one of the greatest North Indian classical musicians of his generation. A scion of the celebrated Imdad Khan gharana, he is the son and disciple of the legendary Ustad Vilayat Khan and represents the seventh generation of an unbroken musical lineage. His distinctive gayaki ang style—where the sitar emulates the subtle inflexions of the human voice—has won him worldwide acclaim.
Shujaat began playing sitar at the age of three and was recognised as a child prodigy by six. Since then, he has performed at India’s leading music festivals and on the world’s grandest stages, including Carnegie Hall (New York), Royal Albert Hall (London), and the United Nations General Assembly Hall (Geneva). His performances are marked by lyrical expressiveness, a resonant singing voice, and an instinctive, spontaneous command of rhythm.
A prolific and versatile artist, Shujaat has collaborated widely, from his Grammy-nominated album The Rain with the Indo-Persian Ghazal ensemble to Naina Lagai Ke with Asha Bhosle, which led to sold-out concerts in London and across the UK. His album Lost Songs of the Silk Road was recognised among Amazon’s “100 Greatest World Music Albums of All Time.”
Beyond the stage, Shujaat has served as a visiting professor at leading institutions, including the University of Washington, UCLA, and Dartington School of Music. His music has reached cinema audiences through his compositions for Mr Singh and Mrs Mehta and his performance in Mira Nair’s A Suitable Boy.
With over a hundred CD releases and a career spanning decades, Shujaat Husain Khan continues to uphold and reinvent a majestic tradition, inspiring audiences worldwide with his artistry and legacy.
