The `Urdu Readings` program is an attempt to enter the rich world of Urdu literature through the journey of the modern Urdu short story. Starting with Premchand, it will include stories by writers from the progressive movement, the shifts in style and ideas in the subsequent period, and contemporary writers who continue to keep the short story alive as a genre in India and Pakistan. Conceived with the help of writer, academic, Aslam Parvez, the program presents an alternative history of India through the work of some of the finest Urdu writers. These are dramatic readings, presented by theatre actors who share a passion for language and theatre.
This is a six month program conducted on two Fridays every month at Studio Tamaasha. The program includes representative stories of each writer and a guided discussion after the readings. Initially a session was dedicated to stories by a single writer. Current readings will include stories of two to three writers in each session.
The program began with Premchand who is credited for the first modern short story in Urdu. The following sessions were of the Progressive Movement writers - Manto, Bedi, Krishan Chander, Ismat Chughtai, and Quaratul Ain Haider.
