Early Life:
M.A. Nishad was born to P.M. Kunju Moideen Kutty IPS, a retired DIG of Police, and Natheeja Moideen, in Punalur, Kollam District, Kerala. With his paternal roots in Kottayam, Nishad grew up in an environment that balanced traditional values with modern aspirations. He completed his education at Mar Ivanios College in Trivandrum and TKM College of Engineering in Kollam, gaining a well-rounded academic background before eventually pursuing his passion for cinema.
Personal Life:
M.A. Nishad is married to Faseena Nishad, and together they have two children: a son named Imran Nishad and a daughter named Hiba Nishad. The family currently resides in Ernakulam, Kerala.
Movie Career
As Producer:
Nishad has contributed significantly to the industry as a producer, starting with Oral Mathram (1997), a film that deals with familial relationships. His later productions, including Dreams (1999) and Thillana Thillana (2003), further demonstrated his ability to produce both engaging and socially relevant cinema. His production of Aayudham (2008) and No. 66 Madhura Bus (2012) once again highlighted his keen eye for meaningful narratives.
As Director:
His directorial debut, Pakal (2006), was a bold and impactful exploration of farmer suicides in Kerala, cementing his reputation as a socially conscious filmmaker. This film won him the Best Debutant Director award from the Kerala Film Critics Association and the Best Director award from the Singapore Cultural Association. Throughout his career, Nishad has skilfully blended mainstream cinematic appeal with deeper messages, making him a highly respected figure in the film industry. Among his most notable directorial works are Nagaram (2007), which examines the complexities of urban life, and Vairam: Fight for Justice (2009), a gripping drama about seeking justice. Aayudham (2008) further solidifies Nishad`s reputation for tackling socially relevant issues. Best of Luck (2010), though lighter in tone, still showcases Nishad`s talent for balancing entertainment with meaningful storytelling. His film No. 66 Madhura Bus (2012) delves into human emotions and relationships set against the backdrop of a bus journey, while Keni (2018) and Kinar (2018- which won him the Kerala State Award for best story writer, FOKANA award for the best director and JC foundation award for best film), continue to highlight the social issues prevalent in rural communities. Nishad`s film Thelivu (2019) touches upon psychological and existential themes, while his latest release is Iyer in Arabia (2024). His upcoming movie Oru Answeshanathinte Thudakkam will be released on November 2024.
As Writer:
Nishad has also made a mark as a screenwriter. He penned the script for Nagaram (2007) and followed it with Aayudham (2008) His writing for Keni (2018) and Kinar (2018) further cemented his reputation for addressing relevant social issues through his writing, with Iyer in Arabia (2024) being the latest in his line-up. He is also the story writer of Pakal, Nakaram, Aayudham, Vairam, and Oru Anweshanathinte Thudakkam.
As Actor:
Beyond directing, writing, and producing, Nishad has also taken on roles as an actor, starting with his appearance as a child artist in Anthiveyilile Ponnu (1982). He later transitioned into more mature roles, such as playing Adv Prakash Mathew in Oru Korean Padam (2014), the Lawyer of DYFI in Valiya Chirakulla Pakshikal (2015), SP in She Taxi (2015) and Juby Ninan in Ore Mugham (2016). His portrayal of and Chandran in Vakku (2017), Abubakker in Two Men (2022), CI Jayachandran Nair in Bharatha Circus (2022) has won him a Special Jury award for best actor from the Kerala Film Critics Association, showcased his range as an actor. Two Men also won him the Best Actor award from UFMC & Dubai International Film Festival. Another one of his recent performances is as Radhakrishnan Nair in Lessons (2019).
