An executive producer, P Som Shekar started his career with the Aamir Khan, Urmila Matondkar, and Jackie Shroff-starrer romantic drama Rangeela in 1995. He then went on to be associated with a number of Hindi movies as an executive producer such as Daud, Satya, and Company.

Making his directorial debut and his debut as a producer, Shekar directed the 2010 romantic comedy Muskurake Dekh Zara, which featured Gashmeer Mahajani and Twinkle Patel in the lead. In 2018, Shekar produced with the Anu Prabhakar and Ramesh Aravind-starrer Tunturu, which marks his Kannada film debut and also his debut as an actor.
