Shaffer's ambitious and hugely successful drama on the life and times of Mozart and his arch rival Antonio Salieri tells a compelling story, in which Salieri accuses himself of orchestrating Mozart's descent into abject poverty, finally leading to his untimely death. Universal themes of love, jealousy, and obsession run through the play, enhanced by the immortal music of Mozart that underscores the passions that motivate Salieri's intense desire to at least equal Mozart, if not better him. Genius and mediocrity collide and all of Salieri's pleas to his God go unheeded as he watches Mozart effortlessly create one masterpiece after another. This is quite obviously a labour of love for Shaffer whose understanding of the deep meanings of the music (opera and orchestral) gives the playwright the opportunity to give us a script full of passion and unmatched eloquence and depth. Present day Indian audiences, with their global perspectives and appreciation of art, culture and music will appreciate the essence of Shaffer's play while appreciating the production for its carefully crafted imagery, costumes and production design.
The director, Arjun Sajnani shares Shaffer's passion for Mozart and music in general, bringing to life this immortal man, and his music, to life for the Indian stage.
