About The Event
Piyakkad, a Hindi play written and directed by Makarand Deshpande, is a poetic solo performance that explores a "Divine Drunkard Doctrine". It distinguishes a true, philosophical seeker (a Piyakkad) from an ordinary drinker (a Bevda). The play breaks the fourth wall immediately, with Deshpande directly addressing the audience as an eccentric, friendly storyteller. He recounts tales of notable characters in his life who were chosen by Madira Baba (the god of intoxication). These figures include an intimidating yet kind-hearted man, and a beautiful woman who kept alcohol bottles hidden behind her books. Through monologues, the performance sidesteps strict moral judgments about alcohol. Instead, it uses intoxication as a metaphor to explore deeper human conditions like loneliness, the fragile mind, and a surreal search for freedom. The character searches for truth and escape, blurring the line between his real life and his imagination.
