Chaandni Raatein is an adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky's White Nights.
In a bar in St. Petersburg, a lovelorn boy (Majnu) tries to woo back his ex-girlfriend. A stranger walks into the bar to tell him another love story - of a lonely boy who falls in love with a girl who is in turn, waiting for her fiancé to return.
When the fiancé does not return as promised, the girl tricks the boy into delivering a love letter to him. Yet the fiancé does not come! The girl accepts the boy's (Deewana’s) proposal on a beautiful night as they dance away. But just as the dawn breaks, the fiancé returns …..
Back in the bar, Majnu wonders if Deewana ever delivered the letter?
The story replays from three perspectives - of the stranger, the stranger's wife, and the bar owner. These inform the Majnu of his next move. What does he choose?
