About The Event

The play ‘Daastan-E-Laila Majnu’ mesmerizes you with its Scenes, Melodies, Rhymes and Rhythms.

The enduring popularity of the legends Laila-Majnu has influenced Middle Eastern literature where the name Laila refers to the concept of the Beloved and Majnu is referred to as one who is completely possessed, as might be expected of a person who is literally madly in love. Another variation on the tale tells of Laila and Majnu meeting in school. Majnu fell in love with Laila and was captivated by her. The families learnt of this and began to feud, preventing Laila and Majnu from seeing each other. They meet again later in their youth and Majnu wishes to marry Laila. Laila’s brother, Tabrez, would not let her shame the family name by marrying Majnu.

Tabrez and Majnu quarreled and in ensuing feud Tabrez lost his life. Word reached the City Kazi and Majnu was arrested. He was sentenced to be stoned to death by City Kazi. Laila could not bear it and agreed to marry another man if Majnu would be kept safe from harm in exile. Her terms were accepted and Laila got married to Shehzada Bakht, but her heart still longed for Majnu.

Hearing this, Bakht gave her Talaq and drew her out of the palace. Laila, went straight to the desert where Majnu was exiled, enduring the pain as she was stabbed on the way. Bakht rode into the desert to find Majnu and upon finding him with Laila he challenged Majnu but surrendered to his possession. Story ends on a tragic note as Laila could not sustain injuries - died and soon after Majnu also gave his life.
