About The Event

Marking Zeenat Aman’s comeback as Kasturba Gandhi, on stage after 19 years with “Dearest Bapu, Love Kasturba”, the play attempts to trace the historic events that transformed Gandhi into the Father of the Nation and subtly recounts the marital woes that defined his relationship with Kasturba for 60 years. ``Marriage chocked me… I learnt the concept of Satyagraha from you, my feisty better half``, confessed Gandhi. Arif Zakria as Mahatma Gandhi & Zeenat Aman as Kasturba Gandhi perform in the background of India’s Freedom Struggle, Partition, Satyagraha & everything happening in the 19th century in India & also in Gandhi’s life.

The play opens with the drama of the Quit India movement. Gandhi is arrested & sent to the Aga Khan Palace in Pune. Kasurba leads in his absence. She too is arrested & sent to the Arthur Road Jail in Bombay. Due to bad health she is sent to be with Gandhi. A few years later she passed away. Now, her soul write letters to Gandhi. These letters evaluate their relationship of 60 years. From marriage till death, the letters leave nothing. She writes & Gandhi responds, nothing is left out – Politics, Marriage, Family, Children, Sex, Companionship. The letters form the core of the love story.

There's a beautiful moment in the play, Dearest Bapu, Love Kasturba when Kasturba reads out a letter her spirit has written from beyond the grave. It is about the time she was released from prison in the early 1940s while Gandhi was still shackled. She says, ``What do I do of freedom if it is to be had without you?``
