ROBROO Theatre Group presents Ek Awaaz Mohabbat Ki – Laleshwari, portraying Lal Ded as a searching, defiant human being rather than a distant saint.
The play begins within the confines of marriage and household duty, where Lal’s spiritual unease quietly collides with social expectations. Scenes of domestic tension and silence give way to moments of sudden poetic utterance, as her vakhs emerge like truths she can no longer suppress.
The narrative traces her gradual withdrawal from prescribed roles and her movement towards an inward, uncompromising quest for the divine. A small chorus shifts between society’s judgment and Lal’s own inner questioning, blurring the line between external conflict and inner struggle. Minimal staging and a sparse soundscape keep the focus on language, breath, and the physical cost of spiritual freedom.
Her poetry is presented as raw and grounded—born from suffering, yet luminous with insight and rebellion. Rather than offering a linear tale of enlightenment, the play embraces doubt, rupture, and moments of ecstatic clarity. It concludes with Laleshwari’s voice lingering beyond her life, suggesting that her questions continue to unsettle, guide, and console.
