About The Event
Through moments of accord and spirited debate, playwright Shailesh Parikh and director Ankit Gor bring the extraordinary bond between Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi to the stage.
Between 1915 and 1941, Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi shared a relationship marked by deep affection, mutual admiration and spirited disagreement. ‘Gurudev Ane Gandhi’ traces their exchanges through letters, public conversations and the mediating presence of British activist Charles Freer Andrews, offering a glimpse into a friendship shaped as much by difference as by shared respect.
The Gujarati play brings their defining debates on nationalism, education and the charkha into focus, while drawing a compelling contrast between Tagore’s artistic sensibility and Gandhi’s austere simplicity. Though their ideas and political approaches often diverged, their regard for one another remained steadfast, allowing disagreement to become a space for deeper dialogue.
Through an intimate dramatic chronicle rooted in history, ‘Gurudev Ane Gandhi’ captures the intellectual curiosity and enduring warmth that defined their relationship. Written by Shailesh Parikh and directed by Ankit Gor, the production was recently staged at the Sangeet Natak Akademi’s national theatre festival.
