The performance of the Big Fat Company (BFC) uses well-known Kannada play ‘Hayavadana’ by Girish Karnad as a springboard to raise questions about aesthetic choices, the cultural narrative around the body and actors’ relationship to character. The choice of ‘Hayavadana’ seems right because it deals with central issues of mind/body/identity that we are deeply engaged with & because of its professional & personal significance for the cast & crew of BFC who are rooted in Kannada theatre. Head 2 Head, by BFC, is a production that uses the iconic play to ask social, cultural & political questions that come from the very personal experience of being a plus-size actor in today’s world.
