Dr Chandrashekhar Kambar's Jokumaraswamy succeeds in identifying various manifestations of patriarchy and its impact on the lives of women. In this play, Kambar, an outstanding playwright, makes the women characters expose and oppose patriarchal oppression. In Jokumaraswamy, Gowda is the product of a patriarchal society which sustains a conceptual framework that maintains structures of domination. He regards women and nature as irrational beings meant to be dominated and exploited for the needs of man. Patriarchal society sustains false notions about men and keeps them blind to their real nature.
With the wisdom of ages, Shari and Ningi examine the weakness and hypocrisy of Gowda and stand as testimony to the idea that women are wiser than men. They scrutinize patriarchal systems that oppress women and reveal the false ideologies behind them. These women also express a strong concern for nature and assert its intrinsic value and worth.
By portraying patriarchy in religious practices and the creation of gods, Kambar highlights its pitfalls and calls for a new perspective that acknowledges the contribution of women. By exposing the false centrality of man, he challenges the illusion of superiority and brings attention to the shortcomings of such social structures, placing women at the centre of discussion.
Jokumaraswamy is directed by theatre legend BV Karanth with music by Dr Chandrashekhar Kambar. Continuing the legacy of Benaka, founded by BV Karanth, this classic play has been staged in Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and across Karnataka at various festivals, receiving an enthusiastic response from audiences.
