The play has only three characters: The Author, Abram Yonkers, who is known as Buks, and Buks’ granddaughter, Veronica.
The play is filled with a strong bond and immense love between the grandfather and his granddaughter. It tells the story of the conflicts that arise for Buks and Veronica when a white man expresses interest in buying the Landman estate where they live. Buks worries that the new owner will not allow him to continue sharecropping on his land, while Veronica dreams of the possibility of escaping the village entirely.
