About The Event

The narratives of Mahadev, the protector of nature, convey a clear message—remain close to nature and distant from artificiality. Worshipped in both the Nirguna and Saguna forms, His eternal Sadashiva manifestation reinforces every principle of philosophy and spirituality.

The play Mahadev begins with the emergence of the radiant, fiery Linga form of Rudra, who resolves the conflict of supremacy between Brahma and Vishnu.

Mahadev offers a logical path to liberation from human fears, greed, and the deep attachment to material desires. He places Shakti—the feminine principle—at the highest pedestal. His reverence for Shakti is evident in the episodes of Shatarupa, Sati, Uma, Kali, and the descent of Ganga.

When Brahma becomes drawn toward his own daughter-like creation, Shatarupa, Mahadev severs Brahma’s fifth head, giving him a stern reminder to remain within the bounds of propriety.

Although Brahma initially opposed Mahadev’s marriage, he eventually arranged Sati's union with Him with certain conditions. Yet, the arrogance of Sati’s father, Daksha, leads to her self-immolation, which in turn gives rise to Mahadev’s profound grief and the destructive fury that follows.

Later, Shakti wins Shiva’s heart once again through her devoted love, and Mahadev marries Uma—the daughter of Himavan—arriving with an extraordinary and eccentric wedding procession. He is a householder and a great yogi, a protector and a destroyer, and the easily-pleased Ashutosh.

The play Mahadev presents the vast and unique expanse of the Sadashiva consciousness through a fresh, contemporary lens.
