About The Event
A travelling folk-carnival troupe sets out to perform Romeo & Juliet exactly as Shakespeare wrote it — poison, dagger, double funeral and all. But somewhere around the poison bottle, the actors stop cold. Two feuding mohallas, the Capitulists and the Monotonouses, have been at war for so long that nobody quite remembers how it started; "the quarrel is older than the story itself." When heartbroken Romeo crashes a party thrown by the rival clan and falls for Juliet, the whole neighbourhood scrambles to keep the story on script — families scheme, a Nurse gossips freely, and a wedding-planning Servant insists he's secretly the plot's real hero. Two live Narrators run the whole show, cueing songs, heckling the plot, and dragging the audience into the argument. As the tragedy nears its scripted end, Romeo, Juliet, and their own Narrators stop to ask a question no version of this play has asked before: does anyone actually have to die tonight? Ro Mat Juliet is a folk-carnival musical comedy in Hinglish, with live music and a double cast — and an ending that finally lets Shakespeare's lovers breathe.
