Maulana Azad has been billed as one of the finest works on Indian Stage as it is a live treatise on the life, times, and scholarship of the Maulana,
played by his look alike Tom Alter. No wonder then, this solo performance has also been called "the biggest casting coup" in the history of Indian theatre.
The play evolves in the backdrop of Maulana Azad dictating notes to his secretary Humayun Kabir for his book - India Wins Freedom. While talking about the book, which is largely political, Maulana Azad often digresses from the subject. As a result, he discusses no less the apolitical - from White Jasmine Tea to Taj Mahal; from Music to Mecca; and from Cigarette to Cheeta Khan.
On the political front, Maulana's narrative includes numerous anecdotes and memoirs pertaining to the events leading to, according to the Maulana, "first India's partition and then Indias freedom". Maulana's personal relations with Gandhiji, Nehru, Patel and Jinnah also come under the review in the course of the play.
The play has been written and directed by Dr M Sayeed Alam, reputed for his penchant for historic and
humorous plays. Last but not the least, the play is produced by Pierrots Troupe - the theater company credited with giving many new, original and entertaining productions to Hindi, Urdu and English Theatre: Ghalib In New Delhi, Maulana Azad, Cut.Cut.Cut, Big B, Ghalib, K L Saigal, Sons of Babur, Lal Qile Ka AakhriMushera, Ghalib Ke Khat, Shah Jahan-O-Mumtaz, Pakistan Aur Alzheimer's, To Gandhi Ji With Spelling Mistakes, Tumko Chahoon, Raja Nahar Singh, etc.
