MUGHAL-E ISHQ (Urdu) reimagines an epic—the famous Saleem-Anarkali love story: The play revisits, primarily as a dance drama, the timeless tale that has earlier been represented well in the play Anarkali and the movie Mughal-e Azam.
Drawing from both, this play addresses this love story with refreshing dialogues, the Kathakization of the Mughal-e Azam songs, and a renewed perspective, i.e., Emperor Akbar’s failure to overcome the “class divide” in sharp contrast to his success in mitigating the “religious divide."
Briefly put, the play brings alive the grandeur, passion, and the power dynamics of the Mughal era through theatre, wit, and compelling contemporary interpretation
It is written and directed by Dr. M. Sayeed Alam, known for his penchant for history, Humour and histrionics. It includes some of Delhi stage’s most renowned actors, including Harish Chhabra, Anju Chhabra, Alina Zulfiquar, Astha Gupta, Himanshu Srivastava, with Dr Alam playing the all-important role of Akbar.
Last but not the least, the play is produced by Pierrot’s Troupe, the theater company credited with giving many new, original and entertaining productions to Hindi, Urdu and English Theatre: Ghalib In New Delhi, Akbar The Great Nahin Rahe, Maulana Azad, Big B, Ghalib, K L Saigal, Ghalib Ke Khat, Shah Jahan - O- Mumtaz, Pakistan Aur Alzheimer’s, The Tale of Quarles, Lal Quile Ka aakhri Mushaira etc.
