Rani is a young woman trapped in a cold and controlling marriage with Bhairava. He barely talks to her, locks her inside the house, and only returns home for food. He’s in love with another woman and treats Rani like she doesn’t exist.
One day, a blind old woman named Kaki gives Rani a magical love root. She says if Rani mixes it into her husband`s food, he’ll fall in love with her. But Rani is scared of what might happen, so she throws the mixture near a snake hole instead.
A shape-shifting snake drinks it and falls in love with Rani. Every night, he takes the form of her husband and comes to her. Rani, thinking her husband has changed, finally feels loved. Later, she becomes pregnant.
When the real Bhairava finds out, he’s furious. He says he never touched her, so how can she be pregnant? The village elders call a Panchayat and give Rani a cruel test to prove her truth: either hold a red-hot iron rod or put her hand in the snake’s hole.
Rani chooses the snake hole. The snake, who truly loves her, doesn’t bite. Everyone is shocked. They believe Rani is blessed, maybe even a goddess. Bhairava finally accepts her with love.
But the snake, heartbroken, hides inside her hair in his tiny form. In the end, he dies silently while Bhairava combs her hair.
A magical story about love, loneliness, truth—and a snake who dared to love like a man.
