About The Event
Srimanta
Sankaradeva`s Parijat Haran is a celebrated classical dance drama inspired by
the Bhagavata Purana and the Harivamsa. The story beautifully portrays
Krishna`s divine lila through the contrasting emotions of Rukmini and
Satyabhama.
The story
begins when Narada brings a celestial Parijat flower from heaven. Krishna
lovingly presents the flower to Rukmini. When Satyabhama learns about the gift,
she becomes jealous and distressed. To console her, Krishna promises to bring
the entire Parijat tree from heaven.
Krishna later
travels with Satyabhama to Kamarupa, where he defeats Narakasura, restores the
stolen celestial treasures and establishes Bhagadatta as king. He then proceeds
to heaven to obtain the Parijat tree. When his request is refused, a
confrontation follows and Krishna ultimately brings the celestial tree to
Satyabhama.
On returning
home, Satyabhama proudly displays the Parijat before Rukmini. Rukmini, however,
responds with serenity, humility and devotion, revealing a deeper understanding
of Krishna`s divine grace.
Through music,
dance, drama and expressive storytelling, Parijat Haran explores love,
jealousy, pride, devotion and surrender while celebrating the spiritual and
artistic legacy of Srimanta Sankaradeva and the classical traditions of Assam.
