Kheyechish?—“Ate?”—is her mother’s favourite question and her least favourite one to answer. Living in Mumbai on ₹18,000 a month (most of it gone in rent), she survives on unpaid rehearsals, borrowed meals, and the hope that dinner will magically appear somewhere.
It’s been a year since she last ate Alu Posto and Phena Bhaat—comfort foods with a history of hunger baked right in. A grocery run turns into a maths problem she can’t solve, and she leaves empty-handed. Cooking live in front of an audience, she turns these moments into stories—about money, food, pride, and the strange etiquette of needing help without looking like you do.
Blending theatre, storytelling, and shared ritual, Kheyechish? is a sharp, tender, and darkly funny look at hunger—for food, dignity, and a place at the table. Inspired by a poem "The Shopper" by Bertolt Brecht, the piece was developed with the Niloufer Sagar Drama School Mumbai Alumni Production Grant.
