For centuries, Lavani has been a vibrant and expressive dance form from Maharashtra, deeply embedded with queerness in both its content and presentation. Traditionally performed by both women and men dressed as women, Lavani is celebrated for its daring lyrics and infectious rhythms and speaks a unifying language of love and desire that cuts through the boundaries of caste, class, age, language, gender, and sexuality.
'Rang Birangi Lavani' seeks to explore and honour this queerness, blending dynamic narratives with immersive, interactive dance performances. The play’s stories depict many uniquely queer experiences while still tapping into universal themes of love, loss, desire and longing in the signature Lavani style full of vibrance and mischief.
