Catch a sharp, spirited Marathi musical play written by Girish Datar and Apurva Kulkarni, where Maharashtra’s folk idioms turn questions of censorship, misinformation and freedom of expression into rhythm, humour and performance.
Blending Maharashtra’s vibrant folk traditions with contemporary political discourse, Sawal Jawab transforms questions of censorship, misinformation and free expression into rhythm, humour and song.
Written and directed by engineer-turned-theatre makers Girish Datar and Apurva Kulkarni, this Marathi musical play revolves around Kalawati, a Lady Shahir who runs her own Tamasha troupe, and a politician’s P.A. As the exchange builds, every argument by Kalawati is delivered as a traditional musical performance, bringing the energy of folk theatre into a sharp contemporary conversation.
Performed by multidisciplinary dancer, singer and actor Sukanya Gurav and actor, comedian and singer Sanket Joshi, the production brings together music, humour and strong theatrical presence. Sukanya brings power and grace to Kalawati, while Sanket brings wit, nuance and dynamic stage presence to the role of the P.A.
Minimalist in design yet high on energy, ‘Sawal Jawab’ offers a humorous, distinctly local and universally resonant voice on the freedom of expression.
